What does pup mean in football? June 21, 2023 – Posted in: Featured Articles – Tags:

We learn about players who are put on the PUP list each NFL season. While some are aware of what this signifies, others are not. The list is intended for athletes who are injured and are therefore unable to play or practice.

During mini-camps and training camps both in the summer and during the season, we frequently hear the phrase “PUP list” if a player has a serious injury. Today, we’ll examine the NFL’s list in detail and look at the prominent players who are currently included.

Why is there a PUP list?

The acronym PUP stands for “physically unable to perform.” When a player enters training camp with an injury, they are unable to play or practice. Players who are currently on the list are permitted to participate in all team activities aside from practices. It seems dull, doesn’t it?

A player must stay on the list for four weeks if they are still on it at the start of the season. They are therefore prohibited from practicing or playing for the first four weeks. The team has a three-week window to activate, release, or place the player on injured reserve once those four weeks have passed, giving them time to recruit a replacement.

How will the PUP list be governed in 2022?

The PUP list has its own small set of regulations that teams must follow, much like any other NFL rules. Teams are aware that a player can only be added to the list prior to the training camp’s scheduled start date. Players are not permitted to practice (in most situations, they cannot due to injury), but they are still permitted to attend group meetings and utilize any team facilities.

During the preseason, players may be “activated” or removed from the list at any time, although teams are aware that once a player is taken off the list, they cannot be put back on. As a result, a player cannot be added back to the roster if the team believes they are healthy enough to practice but they are not. The player is ineligible to be added to the list again even if they have another injury.

What players from the NFL are on the PUP list?

Unfortunately, accidents happen in sports. According to Yahoo Sports, these are a few of the well-known players who are currently on their team’s PUP or NFI lists at the time of writing.

The full list of players on the PUP list is as follows:
